Scientific Description:

Herbs or small shrubs, heterostylic or homostylic. Leaves entire, alternate or rarely opposite, with or without stipular glands. Flowers borne in cymes, or solitary. Sepals 5, entire. Petals 5, free or coherent by their claws, evanescent. Stamens 5, the filaments united at the base and alternating with 5 small staminodes. Capsule 5-carpellate, usually dehiscent and shortly beaked, each cell divided by a secondary septum. Seeds 10, glossy, flattened.

Public Description:

Linum is a genus of herbs or small shrubs known as “flax”, is native to temperate and subtropical regions of the world. There are approximately 141 and 42 species (53 taxa) in Türkiye. The flowers of most species are blue or yellow, rarely red, white, or pink. The flax is widely grown for linen fibre, linseed and flax oil. Several flaxes are cultivated as garden ornamentals, including the blue-flowered species “blue flax (Linum narbonense L.)”, “Lewis' blue flax (Linum lewisii Pursh.)”, and “perennial blue flax (Linum perenne L.)”.
