Public Description:

Polygala, commonly known as “Milkwort” or “Snakeroot”, contains annual and perennial herbs, shrubs, vines, and trees. They are distributed widely throughout much of the world in temperate zones and the tropics. There are approximately 623 species in the world and 17 species (22 taxa) in Türkiye. Polygala names comes from the ancient Greek "much milk", as the plant was thought to increase milk yields in cattle. Some species are grown as culture plants. Milkwort species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species.
