Scientific Description:

Annual or perennial herbs, rarely fruticose. Leaves narrow, parallel-veined. Flowers solitary or in cymes or capitate inflorescences. Bracteoles (epicalyx scales) 2-many, closely adpressed to the calyx. Calyx tubular, without scarious commissures or commissural veins, 5-toothed. Petals long-clawed, entire, toothed or fimbriate but never bifid, without appendages. Stamens 10. Styles 2. Capsule dehiscing by 4 teeth. Seeds peltate, with facial hilum.

Public Description:

Dianthus is a genus of annual or perennial herbs rarely subshrubs known as “carnation”, “pink” or “sweet william”. They are native to mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending to north Africa, and North America. There are approximately 300 species in the world and 71 species (86 taxa) in Türkiye. The name Dianthus comes from the Greek words “Dios (of Zeus- is the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek myth)” and “anthos (flower), and is the meaning of “ the flower of god Zeus” . This is was first cited by the famuos Greek botanist Theophrastus who lived in BC. The carnation species have been extensively bred and hybridised to produce many thousands of cultivars for garden use and floristry, in all shades of white, pink, yellow and red, with a huge variety of flower shapes and markings.
