CERASTIUM L. - Mouse-ear Chickweed

Scientific Description:

Annual or perennial herbs, often glandular-hairy. Stipules absent. Sepals 5, free. Petals (4−) 5, white, emarginate, or bifid for up to nearly ½ their length. Stamens 5 or 10. Styles 3−5. Capsule opening by twice as many teeth as there are styles, usually exserted from the calyx and ± curved; teeth small, not extending for more than 1/3 of the capsule length.

Public Description:

Cerastium is a genus of annual or perennial herbaceous plants known as “mouse-ear chickweed” and, and its species spread in almost all over the world, but the highest diversity is seen in northern temperate regions. There are about 205 species in the world and 37 species (39 taxa) in Türkiye. Cerastium species are consumed as food by some butterfly larvae and moths. Some species are field weeds.
