Scientific Description:

Acaulous perennial herb, 3−12 cm, with long overground stolons rooting at their ends. Stipules broadly lanceolate, glandular-fimbriate. Petioles with an indumentum of short deflexed hairs. Leaves ovate-orbicular, obtuse, cordate at the base, crenate, ± glabrous. Flowers fragrant, purple, the lower petal 11−16 mm. Capsules lying on the ground when ripe.

 

Flowering time: AprilMay.

Habitat: Often in shady places, s.l.−1600 m.

Public Description:

Viola odorata, commonly known as “English violet” or “common violet”, is native to Europe and Asia, but has also been introduced to North America and Australia. It is an acaulous perennial herb with fragrant, purple flowers, and grows up to 12 cm in length. It blooms between April and May and is found often in shady places. The sweet scent of this flower is very popular and used in the production of many cosmetic fragrances and perfumes.
