Scientific Description:

Plants 15–40 cm. Leaf ligulate or broadly lanceolate, olive-green, longitudinally striped above with brownish-purple, flushed with purple beneath. Spike to 18 cm. Bracts much shorter than ovary. Flowers adpressed to rachis. Sepal hood ovate, with the tips free, dusty greenish outside, greyish-purple spotted inside. Petals linear, 4–6 mm. Labellum olive- or yellowish-green, tinged with purple towards base; lateral lobes small, rounded; middle lobe ligulate, to 6 mm. Spur 4 mm, adpressed to ovary, apex usually distinctly biconical.

 

Flowering time:  April–May.

Habitat: Coniferous and deciduous forest, grassy places on forest edges, Quercus L. scrub, Corylus L. coppices, on calcareous soil, s.l. –1300 m.

Public Description:

Steveniella satyrioides, commonly known as “takkeli salep” in Turkish, is native to Iran, Türkiye, Crimea and the Caucasus. It is a rare perennial herb growing up to 40 cm in height with greenish and purple flowers. It grows in light oak forests, under the shrubs, dry meadows and rocky places in calcareous soils.
