Scientific Description:

Shrub up to 3 m high; young twigs grey-pubescent; spines leafless. Leaves lanceolate, elliptic or obovate-elliptic, 2−4(−5) × 1−1.5(−2) cm, crenate-serrate, pubescent beneath, especially when young, or entirely glabrous; petioles 5−10 mm. Corymbs many-flowered. Flowers up to 8 mm diam; pedicels 5 mm. Fruit globose, 5−7 mm diam., red or occasionally yellow or orange.

 

Flowering time: April−June.

Habitat: Limestone slopes, sand dunes, in open woodland and scrub, 30−1800 m.

Public Description:

Pyracantha coccinea, commonly known as “scarlet firethorn”, is native to southern Europe and western Asia. It is a spiny shrub with white flowers and red fruits, and grows up to 3 meter in length. It blooms between April and June and is found in limestone slopes, sand dunes, in open woodland and scrub.  It is widely used as an ornamental plant. Edible fruits are used in making jelly, marmalade and sauce.
