Scientific Description:

Plant 20–40 cm. Stem thick, densely covered with brownish sheathing scales; scales obtuse, 3–5 cm. Raceme fairly dense, but rather lax below, 20–30-flowered. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, as long as ovary. Sepals and petals ovate, obtuse, connivent into open hood, c. 10–12 mm diam. Labellum pendent, ± recurved, twice as long as perianth, basal part slightly concave, apical with 2 rounded, falcately diverging lateral lobes.

 

Flowering time: June–July.

Habitat: Mainly shady Fagus L. forests on basic soils, 250–1950 m.

Public Description:

Neottia nidus-avis, commonly known as “bird’s-nest orchid”, is native to Europe, Algeria, Tunisia, western Siberia, Caucasus, Iran and Türkiye. It is a non-photosynthetic parasitic orchid with yellowish–light brown flowers. Bird’s-nest orchid is found in shady woodland, especially beech. It blooms between June and July.
