Scientific Description:

Plant 8−25(−38) cm. Rhizome slender, clothed with brown fibrous leaf remains. Leaves ± linear, rather rigid and closely veined, 0.3−0.5 cm broad, equalling or slightly exceeding flowers. Stem unbranched, 1−2-flowered, often slightly zigzag at nodes. Bracts and bracteoles 3.5−6 cm. Flowers violet-blue, falls prominently veined on a whitish ground; falls 3.8−4.5 cm, lamina ovate-elliptic, 1.3−1.4 × 0.9−1.3 cm, narrowed to a claw 2.5−3 × 0.3−0.5 cm; standards oblanceolate, 3−4 × 0.4−0.5 cm; style branches 2.6−2.8 × 0.5−0.6 cm, with recurved lobes 0.2−0.3 × 0.2−0.3 cm. Ovary with a slender beak 1−2 cm, widening abruptly into perianth tube. Capsule oblong, 1.5 × 1 cm, with a slender beak to 2 cm.

 

Flowering time: June−July.

Habitat: Dry grassy places, in scrub or light woodland, usually on calcareous soils, 900−1350 m.

Public Description:

Iris sintenisii, known as “Sintenisa Iris”, is native to Türkiye, Europe and Russia. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. The "Iris" means "rainbow" in Greek and is also the name of the “Greek rainbow goddess Iris". The Latin specific epithet refers to German botanist and pharmacist Paul Ernst Emil Sintenis. It is a perennial rhizomaceous plant with a blue or lavender purple color, generally less than 30 cm in length. It has linear and lanceolate shaped leaves. It blooms between June and July and is found dry grassy places, in scrub or light woodland, usually on calcareous soils.
