Scientific Description:

Rhizomatous or bulbous. Stems ± obsolescent or well-developed. Leaves mostly basal, flat, equitant, canaliculate, 4-angled or ± terete. Bracts and bracteoles (‘spathe valves’ of various authors) partly or wholly membranous or herbaceous, sometimes leaf-like. Flowers sessile or shortly pedicellate, solitary or in few-flowered cymes. Perianth segments 6, connate at base into a short to well-developed tube, dimorphic, outer 3 (‘falls’) usually differentiated into a glabrous or bearded suberect claw and a patent to deflexed lamina often furnished with a raised central crest and a ‘signal patch’ of contrasting colour; inner 3 (‘standards’) erect, patent or deflexed, either well-developed and ± equal to outer segments or reduced, sometimes to a bristle. Anthers 3, opposite outer segments, extrorse. Style branches 3, petaloid, each branch arched over a stamen and the claw of an outer segment, bilobed at apex; stigma produced as a membranous flap on abaxial surface of each style. Seeds many, sometimes arillate.

Public Description:

Iris is a genus of rhizomatous or bulbous perennial flowering plants known as the same as scientific name “iris”, and spreads from Europe to Asia and throughout North America, in the temperate northern hemisphere. There are approximately 362 species in the world and 50 species (56 taxa) in Türkiye. The "Iris" means "rainbow" in Greek and is also the name of the “Greek rainbow goddess Iris". Cultivar forms and wild species are extensively grown as ornamental plant in home and botanical gardens.
