Public Description:

Fragaria vesca, commonly known as “woodland strawberry”, is native to Northern Hemisphere. It is a perennial herb with white flowers, and red fruits. It blooms between April and June and is found in moist places, especially in forest. Its strongly flavored fruit are used in making jam, sauces and liqueurs. In Türkiye, hundreds of tons of woodland strawberry are harvested annually, mainly for export. The woodland strawberry was known as "Arnavutköy strawberry" or “Ottoman strawberry” because it was once grown in large quantities in Arnavutköy neighbourhood of Istanbul during Ottoman times. It is also grown extensively near the town of Karadeniz Ereğli in Zonguldak province, Türkiye. The "Karadeniz Ereğli Ottoman strawberry Culture and Art Festival" held every May and June is one of the most magnificent events of the Black Sea.
