Scientific Description:

Hairy scapose perennial herbs; rootstock with epigeal stolons. Leaves ternate. Inflorescence a (1−)2−10-flowered cyme. Flowers bracteolate, 5-merous; epicalyx present; stamens 10−30; carpels 10−80. Fruit of many achenes scattered on the surface of an enlarged conical fleshy reddish receptacle.

Public Description:

Fragaria, commonly known as “strawberry”, has a widespread distribution in the world. There are 16 species in the world and 3 species (4 taxa) in Türkiye. Their fruits are eaten raw or used in making juice, desserts, jam, syrup and wine. Their leaves and roots are used easing diarrhoea, digestive upsets and treatment of gout. Fruit juice is used to counteract sunburn, skin blemishes and discoloured teeth.
