Scientific Description:

Biennial, stems usually branched, 10−200 cm, setose, hispid or almost glabrous. Leaves (1−)2−3-pinnate, the segments very variably dentate, pinnatifid or pinnatisect, hairy or glabrous, rarely fleshy. Rays (8−)10-numerous, often inflexed in fruit. Bracts 1−2-pinnatisect, often deflexed in flower and fruit. Petals white, pinkish or yellowish. Central flowers of the umbel sometimes sterile and reduced. Fruit 2−4 mm; spines on the secondary ridges not confluent at the base, shorter than the width of the mericarp.

 

Flowering time: JuneSeptember.

Habitat: Meadows, slopes, sand dunes, fields, etc., s.l.−2000 m.

Public Description:

Daucus carota, known as “wild carrot”, “bird's nest”, “bishop's lace”, is native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia, and naturalized to North America and Australia. It is a biennial plant with white, pinkish or yellowish flowers and grows up to 200 cm in length. Delicate white flower heads are produced after the second year of growth. It blooms between June and September and is found in meadows, slopes, sand dunes and fields. Wild forms have thin, wiry taproots, bearing little resemblance to the bright orange, fleshy root vegetable available commercially, although both share the characteristic carrot fragrance. The carrot is an important root vegetable and has economic importance in the food sector. Carrot is a significant source of some vitamins (A, B, C, E, H) and beta carotene, folic acid, pantothenic acid. In addition to its use as food, it has health-improving properties, such as eyesight ability, cholesterol-lowering and digestion-promoting.
