Scientific Description:

Stem simple or branched, (2−)8−30 cm in flower, ascending to erect, adpressed to patent-setulose, elongating in fruit. Leaves linear, lanceolate, narrowly elliptic or oblanceolate, 8−45 × 2−12 mm, acute to obtuse, sessile, and often slightly discolorous. Inflorescence dense in flower, lax and elongate in fruit. Pedicels 1−3 mm, thickening slightly and elongating to 5 mm in fruit. Calyx 3−4 mm, whitish setulose, accrescent to 4−8 mm in fruit. Corolla white, pale to dark blue or purplish, infundibular, 5−7 mm; limb 3−4 mm diam. Nutlets 2.5−4 × 1.5−2.5 mm, not markedly bigibbous, tuberculate-rugose, beak suberect, scar to 0.75 mm wide.

 

Flowering time: February−June.

Habitat: Limestone slopes, field margins, cornfields, rocky places, fallow fields, steppe etc., nr s.1.−2500 m.

Public Description:

Buglossoides arvensis, common name “field gromwell” or “corn gromwell”, distributed in Central and southern Europe, including Britain, through Asia to the Himalayas. It is is an annual flowering plant.  Flowers white, pale to dark blue or purplish, infundibular shaped. It is found in arable fields, rough ground and open grassy places. The European Union has granted the refined oil of the seed of Buglossoides arvensis novel food status (a type of food that does not have a significant history of consumption or is produced by a method that has not previously been used for food) and some farmers grow it.
