SILENE L. - CAMPION
Scientific Description:
Annual, biennial or perennial herbs, often suffrutescent. Calyx tubular, 10−60-veined, with 5 usually short teeth. Petals 5, lamina and claw usually distinct, the junction often marked by 2 lateral outgrowths (auricles). Coronal scales usually present, variable in form. Stamens 10. Styles 3(−5). Fruit a capsule with variably developed basal septa (which may be completely absent), opening by twice as many teeth as there are styles. Petals, stamens and ovary borne on an elongate internode (anthophore). Seeds variable.

Public Description:
Silene is a genus of annual, biennial or perennial herbs commonly known as “campion” and “catchfly”. It is widely distributed, particularly in the Northern hemisphere. There are approximately 487 species in the world and 141 species (165 taxa) in Türkiye. The name of the genus Silene is derived from the Greek woodland deity “Silenus” in ancient Greek mythology.
