Scientific Description:
Perennial scapigerous herbs, glabrous or pubescent, sometimes farinose, glandular or eglandular. Leaves simple, rosette-forming, not aromatic. Inflorescence bracteate, usually umbellate or verticillate or flowers solitary. Calyx obconical, campanulate or cylindrical. Corolla tube cylindrical, not constricted at throat, limb spreading or campanulate, lobes entire or bifid. Ovary superior. Stamens and style included in or slightly exserted from corolla tube, usually heterostylous. Capsule globose, ovoid or cylindrical, valvate. Seeds numerous.

Public Description:
Primula, commonly known as “primrose”, is native to the temperate northern hemisphere, tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and also in temperate southern South America. Almost half of the known species are from the Himalayas. There are approximately 392 species in the world and 9 species (16 taxa) in Türkiye. The word “Primula” is the Latin and means “first (prime)”, applied to flowers that are among the first to open in spring. They have adapted to various habitats from alpine mountain slopes to boggy meadows and opens flowers in purple, yellow, red, pink, blue or white colors in early spring. Simple leaves are arranged in rosette on the base. Due to the Primrose species are preferred as ornamental plants, they are largely cultivated and hybridized.
