PILOSELLA Vaill. - HAWKWEED

Scientific Description:

Perennial, ± hairy herbs with horizontal or oblique rhizomes and persistent rosettes of leaves from axils of which prostrate leafy, or underground scaly stolons are often developed. Indumentum of simple (glandular or eglandular) and stellate hairs. Stems (1) few to numerous, each with 1numerous capitula. Leaves entire or slightly denticulate, never distinctly petiolate, often all basal; cauline when present usually small. Capitula homogamous, ligulate. Involucre ± campanulate; phyllaries pluriseriate, imbricate. Receptacle flat, pitted, margins of pits shortly dentate; without paleae. Ligules yellow, outer sometimes with a red stripe on outer face, glabrous. Achenes up to 2.5 mm, homomorphic, cylindrical, 10-ribbed, each rib shortly projecting to form a crenulate truncate apex; pappus hairs in 1 series with a few shorter than rest, scabrous to barbellate, dirty white to pale brown.

Public Description:

Pilosella is a genus of perennial herbs, known as “hawkweed”, and is distributed in temperate and subarctic Europe to West Asia. There are approximately 217 species in the world and 35 species (41 taxa) in Türkiye. They have persistent rosettes of leaves and yellow flowers.
