Public Description:
Lysimachia is a genus of perennial or annual herbs, known as “pimpernel” or “loosestrife”, and grows naturally in wetlands, damp meadows and forests in Eurasia. There are approximately 193 species in the world and 7 species (7 taxa) in Türkiye. They mostly have yellow flowers, but there are also dark purple or pink flowering species. The genus is named in honor of “Lysimachus, a king of ancient Sicily,” Lysimachia species are a source of nutrients for some butterflies and moth larvae. Bees of the genus Macropis are specialized to pollinate oil-producing Lysimachia plants. The species in this genus produce a special oil for the insemination of Macropus genus (a kind of bee), and the bees build their nests with these oils.
