Scientific Description:

Annual or perennial. Leaf sheaths connate; ligule membranous, often lacerate; blades flat or somewhat involute, usually hairy. Inflorescence a panicle, very rarely a raceme. Spikelets 1− to many-flowered, disarticulating above glumes and between florets. Florets hermaphrodite. Glumes 1−8-veined, upper usually larger, both usually much shorter than spikelet. Lemma few− to many-veined, usually emarginate, awnless or with 1−9 subterminal awns. Palea normally shorter than lemma, 2-veined with ciliate keels. Lodicules 2. Stamens 3. Caryopsis ovate to narrowly elliptic, normally adherent to palea and tightly enclosed within lemma; hilum narrow, elongate; stigmas 2, borne laterally on a hairy bilobed appendage surrounding caryopsis. Starch grains simple.

Public Description:

Bromus is a large genus of annual or perennial herbs, common known as “brome”, “brome grass”, “cheat grasses”, or “chess grasses”, and is distributed in many habitats in temperate region of the world. There are approximately 169 species in the world and 37 species (47 taxa) in Türkiye. Some species are useful to prevent erosion. Some species are not very useful as fodder because their leaves may even be harmful to livestock due to the high silica content.
