Scientific Description:

Annual. Stems 5−70 cm, erect, solitary or forming tufts. Leaf blades 4−15 cm × 2−4 mm, pubescent; at least lower sheaths hairy. Panicle 5−15 × 2−8 cm, usually dense, becoming secund, nodding, pale green, often shining; branches slender, hairy, flexuous, bearing up to 8 spikelets often forming a fascicle. Spikelets 10−18 × 3−5 mm, lanceolate. Glumes lanceolate, lower 5−8 mm, upper 7−11 mm. Lemma 8−12 × 2−3 mm, lanceolate, with shining hyaline margins; awn 10−18 mm, straight, slender. Palea clearly shorter than lemma. Stamens 3; anthers to 2 mm. Caryopsis 6−9 mm.

 

Flowering time: March−June.

Habitat: Dry, open grassland, sandy places, ruins, as a weed and ruderal, s.l.−2000 m.

Public Description:

Bromus tectorrum, known as “cheat brome” or “cheatgrass”, is native to Europe, southwestern Asia, and northern Africa, but has become invasive in many other areas. It is an annual plant and grows up to 70 cm in length. It blooms between March and June and is found dry, open grassland, sandy places, ruins, as a weed and ruderal. It has high reproductive potential and highly adaptable to different environments.
