Scientific Description:

Annual. Stems 5−50(−90) cm, erect or ascending, glabrous. Leaf sheaths pubescent. Leaf blades 5−20 cm × 2−5 mm, flaccid, softly hairy. Panicle 10−15(−18) × 7−12 cm, very lax, usually simple; branches mostly longer than spikelets, spreading or drooping, rarely bearing more than 1 spikelet. Spikelets 20−30(−36) × 5−8 mm, cuneiform, rough, hairy or glabrous. Lower glume 6−14 mm, subulate, upper glume 10−18 mm, linear-lanceolate. Lemma 14−19 × 2−4 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with an apical notch 1−2 mm deep; awn 15−25 mm, straight, slender, usually longer than lemma. Palea little shorter than lemma. Stamens 3; anthers 1 mm. Caryopsis 7−9 mm.

 

Flowering time: April−July.

Habitat: Ruderal habitats, grassy hills and as a weed of cultivated fields, s.l−1400 m.

Public Description:

Bromus sterilis, known as “poverty brome” or “barren brome”, is native to northern Africa, western and middle Asia, and Europe. It is an annual plant and grows up to 90 cm in length. It blooms between April and July and is found in ruderal habitats, grassy hills and as a weed of cultivated fields. It has high reproductive potential and highly adaptable to different environments.
