Scientific Description:
Annual. Stems to 70 cm, erect or geniculate. Leaf sheaths pubescent or densely hairy. Leaf blades 5−15 cm × 3−6 mm. Panicle to 20 × 10 cm, ovoid, erect, spreading or drooping, sometimes secund; panicle branches slender, pedicels mostly longer than spikelets. Spikelets 15−35(−40) mm, ovate or ovate-lanceolate. Glumes lanceolate, lower 4−5 mm, upper 6−7 mm. Lemma 8−12 mm, horny. Awn 5−16 mm, flattened at base, spreading or recurved when mature, lower awns often much shorter and more erect than upper. Palea clearly shorter than lemma. Anthers 0.75−1.5 mm.
subsp. japonicus
Panicle compound, to 20 cm, spreading or drooping, sometimes secund; spikelets usually numerous; lemma 8−10 mm, with rounded or weakly angled margins; awns rarely exceeding lemma.
Flowering time: May−July.
Habitat: Cultivated land, fallow fields, grassy steppe, dry slopes, s.l.−2300 m.

Public Description:
Bromus japonicus subsp. japonicus, known as “Japanese brome”, is distributed in Eurasia, North Africa and widely introduced elsewhere in the world. It is an annual plant and grows up to 20 cm in length. It blooms between May and July and is found in cultivated land, fallow fields, grassy steppe, and dry slopes.
