Scientific Description:

Biennial, 100150 cm, ± greyish-tomentose to pubescent, often glabrescent. Stem robust, terete, striate or shallowly angled, branched. Basal leaves sessile or subsessile, obovate-oblong, 1555 × 517 cm, coarsely crenate or bicrenate-dentate or obscurely lobed, cuneate at base; upper cauline ovate, cordate or orbicular crenulate. Inflorescence branched, forming oblong-ovate panicle, with ± congested clusters of (1)27 flowers. Lower bracts ovate, acuminate, denticulate, upper lanceolate to linear, entire. Pedicels 215 mm; bracteoles minute. Calyx 2.54 mm, white-tomentose and ± glandular, lobes oblong-lanceolate to ovate-oblong, acute or mucronate. Corolla yellow, 1020 mm diam., with or without sparse pellucid glands, stellate-tomentose outside. Stamens 5, anthers reniform, filaments with purple-violet wool up to anthers, 2 anterior with glabrous connective. Capsule 46 × 34 mm, ovate to broadly ovate, stellate-tomentose.

 

Flowering time: MaySeptember.

Habitat: Meadows, roadsides, coniferous and deciduous forest, 101400 m.

Public Description:

Verbascum bithynicum, commonly known as “koca sığırkuyruğu in Turkish”, is endemic to Türkiye. It is a herbaceous biennial plant with yellow flowers, and grows up about 150 cm tall. The plants form rosette leaves in the first year, and stems in the following season. The leaves on the stem are spirallly arranged. It can be found in meadows, roadsides, coniferous and deciduous forest.
