Tragopogon dubius Scop. - Fistulous goat's beard

Scientific Description:

Biennial, up to 80 cm, usually floccose when young, becoming glabrous. Stem branched from near base. Leaves linear-lanceolate. Peduncles thickened below capitula. Phyllaries 8−12, lanceolate, longer than flowers, 2.5−3 cm in flowering capitulum, 5−6 cm in fruiting capitulum. Flowers lemon yellow. Achenes 25−35 mm, with 5 longitudinal rows of separate scales, and 5 rows of shorter scales between, beak equal to or longer than achene, slightly clavate at apex. Pappus 15−20 mm, greyish-brown, annulus sparsely hairy.

 

Flowering time: May−June(−July).

Habitat: Fields, 400−1840 m.

Tragopogon dubius, known as “fistulous goat's beard” or “yellow salsify”, is native to southern and central Europe and western Asia. It is a biennial herb with lemon yellow flowers, and grows up to 80 cm in length. It blooms from May to July and is found in fields.
