TRAGOPOGON L. - GOATSBEARD
Scientific Description:
Annual to perennial, erect herbs, stems simple or branched. Leaves simple, entire, linear or lanceolate (rarely broadly oblong), parallel-veined, usually broadening near base and semi-amplexicaul. Capitula homogamous, ligulate, solitary on long peduncles. Phyllaries 2(−3)-seriate, herbaceous, ± equal in length, lanceolate, enlarging in fruit, free to base. Receptacle naked. Flowers purple or yellow. Achenes fusiform, glabrous, beaked, 5−or 10-ribbed, each rib usually scaly or ± muricate; beak usually distinct and elongate, separated from pappus by a groove (annulus). Pappus homomorphic, with 2 rows of long plumose hairs, persistent.

Public Description:
Trapogon is a genus of annual or perennial herbs known as “goatsbeard” or “salsify”, and is native to Europe and Asia. There are approximately 141 species in the world and 21 species (25 taxa) in Türkiye. They have purple or yellow flowers and a strong taproot and milky sap. The genus name “Tragopogon” derives from the Greek “tragos” is meaning “goat” and “pogon” is meaning “beard”, possibly refers to the silky fruit heads.
