Scientific Description:

Flowering stems 15−100 cm, subglabrous to densely hirsute. Basal leaves ovate-oblong to oblong, 3−12 × 1.5−5 cm, coarsely crenate or crenate-dentate, obtuse, cordate, petiole 2.5−9.5 cm. Cauline leaves similar but smaller and more shortly petioled. Floral leaves subsessile to sessile, simiar to cauline but smaller; lower pair larger than, remainder equal to verticillasters. Verticillasters in a dense spike, sometimes lower 1−2 remote and 1.5−5 cm apart, 15−20-flowered. Bracteoles ovate-lanceolate to ovate-elliptic, 5−10 mm, herbaceous or hardened, margin ± scarious, tip spinescent. Calyx 5−9(−12) mm, subglabrous; teeth triangular-subulate, 1/4−1/3 × tube, apex spinescent. Corolla white to reddish-purple, 12−18 mm. Nutlets 2.5 × 0.7 mm.

Flowering time: June−September.

Habitat: Damp meadows, marshy lake sides, rocky slopes in forest clearings, 800−1400 m.

Public Description:

Stachys officinalis subsp. balcanica, known as “common hedgenettle”, is distributed in Europe, western Asia and North Africa. It is a perennial herb with white to reddish-purple flowers, and grows up to 100 cm in length. It blooms between June and September and is found in damp meadows, marshy lake sides and rocky slopes in forest clearings. It was used for against snake and dog bites. It has been used in traditional Austrian medicine for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, skin and gynecological problems.
