Scientific Description:

Annual or perennial herbs, sometimes suffruticose at base, rarely dwarf shrubs. Indumentum of simple or rarely stellate or dendroid hairs. Leaves simple, petiolate or sessile. Verticillasters 2−20-flowered, bracteoles present or absent. Calyx tubular to campanulate, 5−10-veined, sub-bilabiate to regular, rarely bilabiate; teeth 5, usually subequal, sometimes 3 posterior distinct from 2 anterior, not dilated at base. Corolla tube subexserted or exserted, rarely included in calyx, annulate or not; limb bilabiate, upper lip concave, entire or emarginate (rarely strongly bifid), lower 3-lobed, middle lobe largest. Stamens 4, exserted from corolla tube; filaments usually with few swollen hairs near point of attachment to corolla tube; anthers dithecous, thecae usually divaricate, sometimes subparallel to parallel. Nutlets obovoid to oblong, sometimes flattened-trigonous.

Public Description:

Stachys is a genus of annual or perennial herbs, sometimes suffruticose at base, rarely dwarf shrubs, known as “hedge-nettle”, and is distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and North America. There are approximately 375 species in the world and 107 species (145 taxa) in Türkiye. These plants used to treat wounds are also known as “woundwort”. Plants of this genus have been used for the treatment of cold, cough, diarrhea, urinary system disorders, hypertension, headache, throat pain and as an antipyretic or stomachic in folk medicine.
