Scientific Description:

Biennial or perennial. Stems 20100 cm, glabrous to sparingly villous-lanate, purplish. Leaves opposite-decussate (rarely alternate), petiole 1-6.5 cm; lamina 2.512.5 × 2.28.5 cm, broadly ovate to oblong, base deeply cordate to cuneate; apex obtuse to subacute; margin bicrenate-mucronate to deeply dentate. Inflorescence subfoliate to aphyllous, cymes 213-flowered. Peduncle 0.46.5 cm; alar pedicel 417(22) mm, glandular, exceeding the narrowly lanceolate to subulate, glandular, 213 mm bracteoles. Calyx lobes 24 mm, ovate to broadly ovate, glandular or eglandular; scarious margin dark brown to white (rarely oblongish), 0.31.2 mm broad. Corolla greenish-brown to purplish-red, 5.8 mm. Stamens included (rarely exserted); filament glands globose; staminode transversely oblong, reniform, suborbicular, non-retuse to ± lobed, rarely obcordate. Capsule ovoid to broadly ovoid, 4.57.5 × 3.54.5 mm, beaked to apiculate.

Median and lower leaves simply or doubly crenate to dentate (teeth not deepened into lobes).

 

Flowering time: April−August.

Habitat: Forests, moist rocky slopes, streamsides, scrub, 152300 m.

Public Description:

Scrophularia scopolii var. scopolii, known as “figwort”, is native to Europe, Türkiye, Russia, Caucasus, North Iraq and Syria. It is a biennial or perennial herb with greenish-brown to purplish-red flowers, and grows up to 100 cm in length. It blooms between April to July and is found in forests, moist rocky slopes, streamsides and scrub.
