Scientific Description:

Perennial with procumbent or ascending, stems 20−60 cm. Leaves with 5−8 pairs of linear to linear-elliptic leaflets adpressed pilose above and below or subglabrous above; stipules connate, membranous, ciliate on margins. Peduncles 2−4 × longer than the leaves. Racemes ovate-oblong or oblong, few to many flowered, elongating after anthesis. Calyx 4−6 mm, pilose to villous, rarely ± glabrous, with teeth 1.5−3 × length of tube. Corolla pink with darker striations; standard 7−9 mm; wings 2−4 mm; keel 6−8(−9) mm. Fruit 4−5 mm with short hard spines on the crest and the disc, and a short adpressed pilose indumentum.

 

Flowering time: May−August.

Habitat: Roadsides, macchie, limestone hills in steppe, fallow fields, Cedrus Mill.-Pinus L. woods, sandy slopes, 200−2000 m.

Public Description:

Onobrychis oxydonta, known as “kır korungası” in Turkish, is distributed in the Balkans and Anatolia. It is a perennial plant with pink flowers, and grows up to 60 cm in length. It blooms between May and August and is found in roadsides, macchie, limestone hills in steppe, fallow fields, cedar-pine woods, and sandy slopes. Onobrychis” means “devoured by donkeys”, from Ancient Greek. These highly nutritious plants are an important forage for heavy working horses in agriculture, and are an excellent nectar and pollen source for bees in honey production.
