Scientific Description:

Annual or perennial, mostly caulescent herbs (rarely a spiny shrub) with an indumentum of simple hairs, rarely glabrous. Leaves imparipinnate with entire leaflets; stipules free or connate. Inflorescence axillary, racemose. Calyx campanulate or tubular with ± unequal linear-subulate teeth. Corolla pink, purple, yellow or white, often with darker venation; standard obovate or broadly elliptic; wings shorter, rarely longer than calyx; keel shorter than standard or ± equalling it. Stamens diadelphous. Ovary asymetrically round to broadly elliptic, 1−2-ovulate; fruit l(−2)-seeded, indehiscent, of one suborbicular segment, compressed or not, glabrous, or pilose or lanate, unarmed or with hooks, spines or teeth on crest and disc.

Public Description:

Onobrychis, known as “sanfoin”, is a genus of annual or perennial herbs and rarely spiny shrubs, and is native to from Central Asia to Iran and Türkiye. There are approximately 148 species in the world and 55 species (65 taxa) in Türkiye. “Onobrychis” means “devoured by donkeys”, from Ancient Greek. These highly nutritious plants are an important forage for heavy working horses in agriculture, and are an excellent nectar and pollen source for bees in honey production.
