Scientific Description:

Stems 40120 cm, with simple eglandular hairs throughout, usually numerous below and deciduous in upper part which becomes scabrous, stellate hairs usually present in upper part. Leaves all cauline, 1540(70), (20)50170 × (5)1545 mm, dark green to slightly glaucous, crowded especially near middle of stem, lanceolate, ovate or elliptic, mostly acute, sharply denticulate to shallowly and irregularly serrate, lower narrowed to broad petiole, upper much smaller, sessile with rounded base, all glabrous or with few simple eglandular hairs above, usually with numerous simple eglandular hairs beneath and on margin, which often break off leaving thickened bases, stellate hairs also present beneath. Capitula 140(100), usually in large much-branched panicle; peduncles up to 40 mm, with numerous to dense stellate hairs and occasional simple eglandular hairs. Involucre 1015 mm; phyllaries linear-lanceolate, ± obtuse, glabrous or with an occasional stellate, simple eglandular or minute glandular hair. Ligules glabrous. Styles yellowish or dark. Achenes c. 3.5 mm, dark.

 

Flowering time: July−October.

Habitat: Scrub, forest and roadside banks, lowland and montane.

Public Description:

Hieracium vagum, known as “kırk şahinotu” in Turkish, is native to Europe, Türkiye, Southern Russia and the Caucasus, but has become naturalized in parts of North America. It is a perennial herb with yellow flowers, and grows up to 120 cm in length. It blooms between July and October and is found in shrub, forest and roadside banks, lowland and montane.
