Scientific Description:

Perennial herb or small sub-shrub. Stems 15−60 cm, pubescent with patent or adpressed hairs. Leaves without rachis; leaflets 4−20 × 1−6 mm; oblong-obovate to linear-oblanceolate, with subpatent or adpressed hairs; internodes 1−6 cm. Inflorescence 4−30-flowered, peduncles 1−6.5 cm. Flowers 3−6 mm, white with pink or purple claws; pedicels equalling calyx-tube or somewhat shorter, 1−2 mm; calyx 2−5 mm, slightly 2−lipped (the two upper teeth broader than the three lower), densely hairy, calyx-teeth ± shortly triangular, acute 1/3−3/4 tube length. Legume 3−5 × 1.5−3 mm, ovoid-globular, beak 1−1.5 mm, valves not contorting at maturity. Seed 1.

Plant densely pilose with subpatent long hairs; leaflets oblong-oblanceolate, 6−18 × 1−4 mm.

 

Flowering time: May−July.

Habitat: Calcareous steppe, dry meadows, stony pasture, Pinus brutia L., Pinus nigra L. and Quercus L. forest, 1001830 m.

Inflorescence 15−30-flowered, flowers 3−5 mm; pedicels usually as long as calyx tube; calyx teeth 1/3−2/3 length of tube; (leaflets oblong-obovate, 4−15 × 2−6 mm; plant sparsely pubescent with patent and somewhat crisped hairs).

 

Flowering time: May−August.

Habitat: Clayey and limestone soils, roadsides, banks, slopes at sea-side, macchie, pasture, s.l.−1600 m.

Public Description:

Dorycnium pentaphyllum, known as “prostrate Canary clover” or “badassi”, is distributed in Mediterranean region. The specific name “pentaphyllum” derives from the Greek “pénte” meaning “five” and “phýllon” meaning “leaf”, referring to the shape of the leaves. It is a perennial herb or sub-shrub with white flowers with pink or purple claws, and grows up to 60 cm in length. It blooms between May and July and is found in clayey and limestone soils, roadsides, banks, slopes at sea-side, macchie and pasture.
