Scientific Description:

Plant (20−)30−60 cm, woolly at apex of rhizome; stoloniferous. Stem sparsely pubescent. Basal leaves few, ovate-elliptic, sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, 6−10 × 5−8 cm, petiolate; cauline leaves sessile, sometimes auriculate or panduriform, amplexicaul. Peduncle glandular-hairy and pilose, bearing a single capitulum.

 

Flowering time: March−July.

Habitat: Shady places in forest and scrub, 50−1900 m.

Public Description:

Doronicum orientale, known as “leopard's bane”, is native to southeastern Europe (Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Hungary, Moldova, Ukraine, southern European, Russia) and Türkiye. The species name “orientale” is meaning “eastern” is in reference to “belongs to the east”. It is a perennial herb with yellow flowers, and grows up to 60 cm in length. It blooms between March and July and is found in shady places in forests and scrubs. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant.
