Scientific Description:
Caulescent, seldom acaulescent annual, rarely perennial, (4−)10−60(−75) cm. Stem prostrate, ascending or erect, 1−many-capitulate glabrous to setose. Basal leaves up to 30 × 6.5 cm, elliptic to obovate, pinnatifid to pinnate with terminal lobe usually larger, rarely entire and dentate, apex acute or obtuse, hispid. Cauline leaves auriculate, upper usually much reduced. Peduncles up to 20 cm, arcuate-ascending. Capitula few- to many-flowered. Involucre (4−)7−15 mm long, ± shortly tomentose with longer glandular or eglandular hairs. Receptacle shortly ciliate or with long paleaceous scales (subsp. commutata). Ligules 5−15 mm, yellow, often flushed red on outer surface. Style branches yellow or pale green. Achenes 6−13(−16) mm, pale to mid-brown, glabrous, spiculate or pubescent, usually 2-morphic, inner almost always beaked. Pappus ± entirely exserted from involucre, very seldom rudimentary.

Involucre usually glandular-pilose when mature, up to 11 mm long; pappus 4(−5) mm.
Flowering time: May−October.
Habitat: Macchie, rocks, sand dunes, fields and pine (Pinus L.) woodland, s.l. −1300 m.

Public Description:
Crepis foetida subsp. foetida, known as “stinking hawk’s-beard”, is native to Europe, Türkiye, Cyprus, Southern Russia, the Caucasus, Iran and West Syria. It is an annual or rarely perennial herb with yellow flowers, and grows up to 75 cm in length. It blooms between May and October and is found in macchie, rocks, sand dunes, fields and pine woodland.
