Scientific Description:

Annual, biennial or perennial plants, caulescent or acaulescent, with taprooted or rhizomatous stocks; indumentum on stems, leaves and involucres of glandular or eglandular simple hairs, often with a very short tomentum, or glabrous. Stems or scapes 1-several, branched or not. Basal leaves usually rosulate, entire to pinnate, petiolate. Inflorescence unbranched, 1-capitulate to a compound corymb. Involucre cylindrical, campanulate or ± urceolate; phyllaries 2−pluriseriate, inner often thickening or carinate in fruit, longer than outer. Receptacle flat or convex, rarely concave, naked, long-hairy or paleaceous. Flowers few to many, yellow, rarely white or red, ligule usually longer than tube. Achenes homomorphic or 2(−3)−morphic, beaked or not, occasionally winged, smooth or spiculate, with (5−)10−20(−30) longitudinal ribs. Pappus usually white, 1-pluri-seriate, hairs capillaceous, scabrous or very shortly barbellate, persistent or deciduous.

Public Description:

Crepis is a genus of annual, biennial or perennial herbs, known as “hawksbeard” or “hawk's-beard”, and is distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and Africa. There are approximately 252 species in the world and 44 species (48 taxa) in Türkiye. They have yellow, rarely white or red flowers. In Crete, some species are eaten in salads as raw, boiled, steamed or fried.
