Scientific Description:

Bulb enclosed by membranous brown or blackish tunics. Aerial shoot sheathed by 1−2 tubular cataphylls. Leaves lyrate, linear or very narrowly Ianceolate, appearing with the flowers (synanthous) or after them (hysteranthous), all basal, flat or shallowly canaliculate on upper surface, keeled beneath. Scapes 1-several, either subterranean at anthesis or clearly visible. Flowers solitary, usually yellow, autumnal or vernal, sessile or shortly pedicellate. Bract membranous, tubular in lower portion, split down one side but not usually to base. Perianth actinomorphic; tube infundibular, short to long; segments 6, in two whorls, equal in length but inner 3 narrower than outer 3, acute, subacute or obtuse, usually bluntly apiculate. Filaments unequal, usually ± in two series. Style entire, with capitate stigma, exceeding the stamens. Ovary subterranean or aerial. Capsule cylindrical, ellipsoid or nearly globose, maturing above ground in those species with subterranean ovaries by elongation of the scape. Seeds large, numerous, dark brown or blackish, sometimes with a fleshy strophiole.

Public Description:

Sternbergia, commonly known as “sternbergia”, is native to Eurasia and North Africa. There are approximately 8 species in the world and 5 species (5 taxa) in Türkiye. Sternbergias are bulbous plants with golden-yellow (rarely white) goblet-shaped flowers and long, strap-like leaves. The leaves may appear with the flowers in the spring species or sometime after in the autumn species.
