Scientific Description:

Unarmed or spinescent trees or shrubs. Leaves deciduous, simple. Inflorescence an umbellate raceme. Flowers white; sepals deciduous or persistent; stamens 20−30; ovary inferior, 5-locular with 2 ovules per loculus; styles (2−)5, free. Fruit fleshy with numerous grit cells.

Public Description:

Pyrus is a genus of unarmed or spinescent trees or shrubs, commonly known as “pear”, and is native to Türkiye, Caucasia, Europe, Balkans, Crimea and İran. There are approximately 69 species in the world and 11 species (18 taxa) in Türkiye. They have white flowers fleshy fruits. Some species are very valuable due to their edible fruit and grown as a cultivated plant. Their high quality woods are used in the production of woodwind instruments and furniture, and in the construction of carved blocks for woodcuts.
