Scientific Description:

Perennials, rhizomatous (in Türkiye). Leaves ciliate, with closed sheaths. Flowers in cymes, often contracted into ± well-defined heads. Fruit a 3-seeded capsule. Seeds with 1 usually conspicuous, firm appendage (caruncle). – Myrmecochorous.

Public Description:

Luzula is a genus of perennial plants with rhizomes and sometimes stolons known as “woodrush”. It has a cosmopolitan distribution, with species occurring throughout the world, especially in the temperate regions, the Arctic regions and the high areas in the tropics. There are approximaltely 141 species in the world and 12 species ( 12 taxa) in Türkiye. These plants, which are usually clustered, have cylindrical stems and narrow leaves, and leaf edges are hairy. The flowers are on the top of the stem and the fruit is in the shape of a capsule.
