Scientific Description:

Biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves digitately lobed or undivided, margins coarsely toothed or pinnatifid. Bracts petiolate, often large but dissimilar to leaves, ± deflexed. Verticillasters many-flowered, remote or usually crowded near apex in an interrupted spike-like inflorescence. Bracteoles linear, subulate. Calyx 5 or 10-veined, teeth spiny, shorter than tube. Corolla strongly 2-lipped; tube not broadening at apex; upper up hooded, villous or pubescent on back; lower up 3-lobed. Stamens 4. Anthers straight or divergent. Nutlets trigonous, hairy at truncate apex.

Public Description:

Leonurus is a genus of biennial or perennial herbs, known as “motherwort”, and is native to Europe, Asia, North and South America. There are approximately 24 species in the world and 4 species (4 taxa) in Türkiye. The most well known species “Chinese motherwort (Leonurus japonicus Houtt.)”, which is used in the treatment of female diseases, is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
