DIPSACUS L. - TEASEL

Scientific Description:

Biennial or annual herbs with prickly stems. Leaves simple or laciniate to lyrate. Capitula globose to cylindrical. Involucral bracts in 1−2 rows, erect or spreading. Receptacular bracts rigid, spine-tipped. Calyx cupuliform, ciliate. Corolla 4-lobed, whitish to lilac. Involucel 4-angled, apex with a short 4-lobed or 12-toothed limb.

Public Description:

Dipsacus is a genus of annual or biennial herbs, known as “teasel”, and is native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa. There are approximately 28 species in the world and 5 species (5 taxa) in Türkiye. The members of this genus are easily recognized by their prickly stem and leaves, and the inflorescence of white, purple, dark pink or lavender flowers that form a head on the end of the stem. Seeds are an important winter food source for some birds. In addition, they are grown as an ornamental garden plant.
