Dipsacus laciniatus L. - Cutleaf Teasel
Scientific Description:
Stout biennial with spiny stems up to 2 m. Cauline leaves connate at base, deeply lobed to pinnatifid, margin bristly-spinose, spiny on underside of leaf, at least on margin. Capitula ovoid to cylindrical, 4−6(−7) × 3−4 cm. Involucral bracts unequal, 3−6(−9) cm, lanceolate, spreading to ascending, rarely exceeding capitula. Receptacular bracts with long apical spine, exceeding flowers; those at top of capitulum usually very much longer than others and forming a 'tuft'. Flowers white or pale pink.
Flowering time: July−September.

Public Description:
Dipsacus laciniatus, known as “cutleaf teasel”, is native to Europe and Asia. It is a biennial spiny plant with white or pale pink flowers, up to 2 meter in length. It blooms between July and September and is found in roadsides, banks and fields. It is easily recognizable by its prickly roots and leaves and egg-shaped floral arrangement with a large number of flowers at the end of the stem. The cutleaf teasel is rarely used as an ornamental plant in gardens.
