Scientific Description:

Perennials or annuals. Ligule membranous. Leaf blades flat. Inflorescence a ± 1-sided linear, ovoid or globular condensed panicle. Rachilla disarticulating above glumes and between florets. Spikelets dimorphic, fertile and sterile, sterile spikelets enclosing or hiding fertile ones. Fertile spikelets laterally compressed, with 1−5 florets; glumes thin, subequal, acute; lemma chartaceous, dorsally rounded, 3−5-veined, with apical awn from sinus; palea 2-keeled, c. as long as lemma, with shortly bifid apex. Sterile spikelets situated below fertile ones and consisting of pectinately distichous glumes and empty lemmas.

Lodicules 2. Stamens 3. Caryopsis elliptic or oblong-elliptic, ± dorsally compressed, adherent to palea, with punctiform, basal hilum.

Public Description:

Cynosurus, is a genus of perennial or annual plants, commonly known as “dogtail grass”, and is native to Mediterranean Basin and neighboring regions. There are 9 species in the world and 3 species (3 taxa) in Türkiye. The genus name “Cynosurus” comes from the Greek “kynos” meaning “of a dog” and “oura” meaning “tail”, which describes the long, bristly panicle of a related species.
