Scientific Description:

Perennial, (15−)25−50(−70) cm, often slightly woody and slightly branched at base; stems erect or slightly ascending at base, robust, ± densely pilose with ± crisp (0.6−)0.8−1.2 (−l.5) mm hairs and with 6−11 pairs of leaves below lowest raceme. Leaves subsessile, (12−)15−25(−35) × 5−20(−30) mm, deeply pinnatisect or ± bipinnatisect (leaves of shoot apex also usually pinnatisect), pubescent with upward-curved or ± crisp 0. 4−1.2 (−l.5) mm hairs; margins slightly revolute; often ± blackening when dry. Racemes (l−)2−4(−6), usually opposite, (6−)10−15(−20) cm, 30−50-flowered, axis and pedicels pubescent with ± crisp eglandular (0.3−)0.4−l.0 mm hairs, peduncle 4−10 cm. Pedicels 3−6 mm, 0.7−1.5 × bracts. Lower bracts pinnatifid, upper linear. Calyx 4−7 mm, lobes 4−5, linear-lanceolate, pilose or glabrous. Corolla bright to deep blue, 12−18 mm diam. Style 5−6.5 mm. Capsule elliptic to suborbicular, (4−)5−7 × 4−6 mm, 1−1.5 × calyx, shortly pubescent or glabrous, base rounded-truncate, sinus ± acute, 0.2−0. 25 × capsule length, lobes often somewhat pointed at apex. Seeds c. 6−12, elliptic, 2−2.5 × 1.5−2 mm, slightly convex, rugose.

 

Flowering time: April−June.

Habitat: Quercus L. and Pinus L. forests and scrub, macchie, stony slopes, ruins, 250−1300 m.

Veronica jacquinii, commonly known as “Jacquin’s speedwell”, grows naturally in the Balkan Peninsula, Eastern Europe and Western Turkey. It is a perennial plant which have blue flower and less than generally 50 cm in length. It blooms between April and June in oak and pine forests, macchie, stony slopes and ruins.
