Scientific Description:

Perennial or (rarely?) annual herb, (20−)30−100(−120) cm, erect, usually ± branched to middle, often with ± repent vegetative branches at base, blackening when dry. Stems usually thick, hollow, glabrous. Leaves glabrous, rarely uppermost glandular-pubescent, lamina (15−)30−70(−100) × (7−)10−25(−35) mm, lower shortly petiolate (but those of basal lateral branches usually distinctly petiolate), ovate, elliptic or oblong, obtuse, upper sessile, broadly lanceolate, ± acute, base of middle and upper cordate-amplexicaul, often subauriculate and enlarged, of uppermost sometimes slightly cuneate; margin serrulate, denticulate to subentire. Racemes 6−25 (incl. lateral branches), 20−40(−50)-flowered with 2−7 pedicels per cm in fruit, glabrous or ± glandular-pubescent with 0.05−0.15 mm glandular hairs (eglandular hairs always completely absent). Bracts linear to lanceolate, acute. Fruiting pedicels 4−7(−8) mm, 1.5−3 × bracts, suberect, arcuate-erect to subpatent. Calyx 2−2,5 mm in flower. Corolla lavender to pale blue or pale lilac, 4−6 mm diam. Style l.5−2(−2.5) mm. Capsule orbicular, inflated, (2.5−)3−3.5(−4) × 2.5−3.2(−4) mm, equalling calyx or slightly shorter, apex not or only very slightly emarginate, glabrous or sparsely shortly glandular-pubescent. Seeds 40−70, elliptic to suborbicular, plano-convex, 0.5−0.6(−0.7) × 0.4−0.5 mm, with dot-like chalaza.

 

Flowering time: March−September(−November).

Habitat: Streams, ditches, banks, springs, swamps, wet meadows, s.l.−2350 m.

Public Description:

Veronica anagallis-aquatica, commonly known as “blue water speedwell”, “water speedwell” or “brook pimpernel”, is a semi-aquatic flowering plants. Its native range is not clear and is found in many parts of the world. It is a perennial plant which is up to 120 cm in length. Blue water speedwell has lavender, blue or lilac flowers. It is often growing in shallow water along streambanks, in ponds, and other wetland environments. It can be seen in flower from the beginning of spring to the middle of autumn.
