Thlaspi alliaceumL. - Roadside penny-cress

Scientific Description:

Annual, 15−30 cm, smelling of garlic, simple and single-stemmed. Basal leaves oblong-lanceolate, simple or lyrate, forming a loose rosette, long-petiolate. Cauline leaves oblong, often adpressed to stem, entire or serrate, amplexicaul, hastate. Petals white, 3 × 1.5 mm. Inflorescence ± corymbose, elongating in fruit. Fruiting pedicels slightly reflexed, 8−12 mm. Siliculae obovate to obcordate, slightly inflated, 6−8 × 4 mm, very narrowly winged and with very short style; septum 6−7 × 4 mm. Seeds punctate, 4−5 in each loculus.

 

Flowering time: March−May.

Habitat: Shady places, near s.l.

Public Description:

Thlaspi alliaceum, common name “Roadside penny-cress”, is distributed in Central and Southern Europe. They are white-flowered, garlic-scented annual plants that grow less than 30 cm in length. These plants, which prefer shady places, can be seen in flower in spring.
