Scientific Description:

Perennial, densely caespitose; basal sheaths swollen, forming a bulb. Stems (9−)20−55 cm, smooth, terete, leafy mainly at base. Ligules 1−2 mm, acute to rounded, hyaline. Leaf blades 0.5−1.5 mm broad, ± tightly involute. Panicle (2−)2.5−7 cm, ± compact (less so if proliferous), ovoid; branches scabrid, 2−4 at lowest nodes. Spikelets often proliferous, 6−20 cm when so, otherwise 3.5−5 (−7.5) mm. Glumes ovate, subequal. Lemma hairy on keel and marginal veins, ± lanate or not at base. Palea keels scabrid. Anthers 1.4−1.6 mm.

 

Flowering time: May−July.

Habitat: Steppe, dry grassland, rocky slopes, macchie, phrygana, cliffs, s.l.−3000 m.

Public Description:

Poa bulbosa, commonly known as “bulbous blue grass” or “ bulbous meadow-grass”, is a perennial herbaceous and bulbous that growing up to 55 cm in length, and grows naturally in Eurasia and North Africa. It blooms between May and July and is found in steppe, dry grassland, rocky slopes and cliffs. Most of the wild and domestic animals, small mammals and birds eat the bulbils with starch and oil that develop on the spikes at the time of flowering. It is also valuable as fodder or pasture grass.
