Public Description:
Lobularia maritima, common name “sweet alyssum” or “sweet alison”, is native to the Mediterranean region, Macaronesia (a phytogeographical region comprising the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde Islands in the eastern North Atlantic) and in France in the Bay of Biscay. It is also widely naturalized elsewhere in the temperate world. It is a perennial herbaceous plant up to 40 cm with tiny fragrant white flowers. The purple or pink flowering cultivars of sweet alyssum are used as groundcover and in wall cracks. In Afghanistan, this plant is used medically for asthma and nervous disorders. In Spain, it is used as a diuretic. The edible flowers and leaves have taste like broccoli. In Spain, also leaves and flowers are used as spices in salads.
