Public Description:
Lathyrus aphaca var. aphaca, common name “yellow pea” or “yellow vetchling”, is native to southern Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. It is an annual herb with yellow flowers. It is also different from the other subspecies in having 2-flowered on the peduncles and its flower bright yellow. The seed contains a toxic amino-acid in large quantities, which can cause a very serious disease of the nervous system known as 'lathyrism'. When taken in small quantities it is stated that the seeds are safe and highly nutritious. It can be widely seen as weeds in fields
