Public Description:

Hedera helix, common name “ivy”, “English ivy”, “European ivy” or “just ivy”, is native to most of Europe and western Asia. The specific epithet “helix” derives from Ancient Greek "twist, turn" and is given because of its spiral structure. The flowers are visible in late summer and autumn and are an indispensable source of nutrients for the insects and bees in the autumn, because they are rich in nectar. It is often planted in Europe to cover the walls and is preferred not only for its ability to cool the interior in summer, for providing insulation in winter, as well as protecting the covered building from soil moisture, temperature fluctuations and direct exposure to heavy weather. Over 30 cultivars have been selected for such traits as yellow, white, variegated, and/or deeply lobed leaves purple stems, and slow, dwarfed growth. In the past, the leaves and berries were taken orally as an expectorant to treat cough and bronchitis.
