Scientific Description:

Laxly caespitose, stoloniferous perennial. Stems 70−130(−260) cm, not tuberous at base. Leaf sheaths open to base, lowermost ones without blades, finally decaying into fibres; ligule fimbriate, 1.5−3 mm; blades flat, (4−)6−15 mm broad, scabrid at margins and on surface. Panicle 10−30 cm, lax, nodding, patent. Spikelets 7−8 mm, with 4−6 florets. Glumes scarious, upper 3.6−3.9 × 1.4−1.6 mm. Lemma ovate-lanceolate, 4.2−5 × 1.6−1.7 mm, subacute or obtuse, strongly 5-vemed, scabrid. Anthers more than 1/2 × palea. Ovary setose to subglabrous.

 

Flowering Time: June−July.

Habitat: Coniferous and mixed woodland, Corylus L. and Rhododendron L. scrub, s.l.−1980 m.

Public Description:

Festuca drymeja, commonly known as “çalı yumağı” in Turkish, is native to Türkiye, Central Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus and Iran. It is a stoloniferous perennial herb and grows up to 2.5 m in length. It blooms between June and July and is found in Coniferous and mixed woodland, Corylus and Rhododendron L. scrub.
